We have had our global family gatherings over Jitsi for many years and it has been brilliant. No login, no plugins or apps, just go to the room URL and it Just Works. We've been using the free instance at meet.jit.si.

Today was very different. First someone had to log in to be moderator, and then we had issues with audio and video quality and lag. Capacity issues at Jitsi HQ? Do we get rid of the enforced moderator if we use a generated URL instead of a handwritten and short one that Jitsi warns is insecure?

We will try again tomorrow, I will check our alternatives probably use some GAFAM solution. Do they work without everyone needing a login? I think so?

That's short term. Long term I'll find another free software solution. Host my own BBB on a VPS? I don't know.

i run a jitsi installation in a kvm on my cheap hetzner server (2x 4 core, 32gb ram, /28 network, 10 virtual machines). installation and upgrading is easy, and it works fine up to 25-30 participants.

TL;DR they turned anonymity off because of increasing abuse of the service. You can host your own jitsi service and have it work the way it used to.
