Well, I don't know if it's my setup (I'm using Firefox with quite a lot of extensions) or if it's the site itself but coming from Twitter I found it relatively hard or cumbersome doing basic things such as attaching images to a post, integrating with third party apps on PC and mobile and even simply following other people.
The more popular third party apps I had a look at seem to mostly be made for Mastodon and so despite the underlying Fediverse protocol I had a mixed experience. For Friendica this means that often I could kind of get them to work but then I couldn't enter certain screens such as the settings screen or toggles wouldn't work here or there.
I wanted a comparison with Mastodon and so I set up an account to see for myself. Turns out, that over there - at least for the specific server I chose - all those things tend to be a little faster, with way less clicks and just feel a bit more modern. Mastodon doesn't have a calendar tab but that's okay for me. It also seems to go for an overall design more in line with the one from Twitter. No problem with app integration either.
Following people on Friendica - unless I misunderstood the approach - is this whole process where I have to copy a user's handle into a form and submit everything, pulling me out of my current context, while on Mastodon I can just click the follow button and I'm done.
I get that Friendica focuses on privacy and so this may involve some tradeoffs here and there. For me personally I just found that for continuous use things have to be streamlined enough for me to want to come back and I'm getting that more with Mastodon.
I might not have wrapped my head around Friendica entirely though because, at least on paper, the platform including its UI seems way more customizable and interoperable with other decentralized social media platforms. It seems to be more focused on power users which I am admittedly not ;)
Mastodon is not Twitter - it's way less addictive by design and has its own little quirks but I guess for me it's somewhere in the middle between a power user system like Friendica and Twitter itself.
In any case, I know that managing a server is hard work and so thanks for putting in the effort and providing this service for free! Since Twitter is morphing into this democracy endangering lunatic platform it's even more important getting people off there and providing sensible social media alternatives out of reach of sociopath billionaires and unaccountable corporations.
thanks for that writeup. i was expecting something like that, i roughly feel the same about it. we stupidly ran a mastodon instance on the abraum.de main domain for testing 2 years ago and deleted it, because it was very confusing, so that domain is now burned for mastodon/fediverse because of key-exchange blah... it is quite obvious that mastodon has much more development going on. i think at some point we will set up one here as well on a different subdomain to check it out again. i also feel that friendica is too cumbersome at places to be used as my daily/main social media thing.

Over the years, Shatner has weirdly denied it happened, but it did, and Flemishdog found a U-MATIC videotape with an unaltered, high-quality version of Shatner's "Rocket Man". And here it is.

@marcel yeah I think so. at this point it's mostly a problem of spending hours and hours of computing power on training, modeling storage and processing queries.

@HugeGameArtGD I remember using SCons back in the day. It wasn't much better than CMake, but at least the language was more familiar. I should give it another chance. Thanks for mentioning meson. I didn't know that one! I love how their main example uses SDL ;)
@arumastudios @HugeGameArtGD compared to most from "back in the day" (makefiles, autotools, scons, ant, jam, maven), CMake is indeed quite a bit better.
There are more modern ones (meson, bazel, buck, fastbuild) that I haven't looked into. Maybe some of them are better.
@HugeGameArtGD I used bazel quite a bit, and I find it very convenient, but I only used it on Linux. Never tried it on other platforms. I'll have to worry about cross-platform C++ very soon, so I'll try all of the above to get a feel for them. Thanks!
"build systems are like opinions, everyone has one and they all stink". (honestly I like cmake fairly well, but I'm aided by the fact that I'm very familiar with it, and it is certainly not without faults.)
I was introduced to CMake when I had to do something with Autoconf in the project that I took on. Trust me, when compared to Autoconf, CMake is godsend.
I only have a little experience with CMake, just having to build this or that. I've dabbled a bit with Meson, though. It's interesting how build systems optimize for entirely opposite things.
Makefiles: Copy this unholy gibberish from one project to another, and dependencies will work. Have to support a new OS? Oh boy! But it's all shell scripts, and you control everything.
Meson: All this is automated for you, but wait! How do I set compiler flags?! What do you mean it's impossible?
Years ago, I had the pleasure of redoing our game's entire build process on Android from ANT to Gradle in order to continue being published on the store.
I had to learn far more Cmake than I could ever imagine. It was not a fun process.
honestly, among the systems I tried, I find CMake to be the most supported and usable. The fact that is among the few that is natively supported by some IDE brings it to the top of the list to me.
every time I pick up cmake I go through the same pain of getting it set up and working. Then I don't touch it as it works. Time passes and all knowledge of cmake leaves my head...
Then you start a new project or add a dependency and the cycle stats again.
I've been forced to become semi literate in cmake because of my job and I have only one positive thing to say about it which is that it is not an IDE specific build file (Usually).
from the ones I tried actively in the past I liked CMake best. Scons had nice syntax but was only fast enough for toy projects. Makefiles were just cumbersome but worked somehow and the boost build system b2... don't know how to phrase it... maybe the Perl of build systems? That might describe it quite well... So, if I would need to start a new C++ project, I'd look into some of the newer ones, but maybe get back to CMake again.
@sinbad indeed, plus it’s reached critical mass pretty much, ie many open source projects provide cmake or nothing, and editors are also supporting it, which will make it hard to shift. Probably best to use a subset of cmake where possible, like c++ funnily enough.
@sinbad @MouseByTheSea find_package is what always brings me back to CMake. There’s so much knowledge baked in those scrips. I couldn’t imagine writing cross platform code without it.

The core aspect of #OpenSource is not public availability, but Software Freedom: The right to use, modify, and share the software for *any* purpose. Access to the source code is a necessary but not sufficient aspect of this freedom.

Would love to hear how the licensing model works out for you. I’ve been considering doing something along those lines for my texture compression work. My worry is that the innovative ideas are fairly easy to copy and replicate without using my code, but at the same time I want to be as open as possible while also finding a sustainable business model.
@castano I’ll let you know but I suspect this specific project is going to take a while to take off (which is fine for me as it’ll help to get spread out feedback and taking the time to react). Also In general I’d say the situation improved from our call 2 years ago.
@castano Also interested. Have been lately thinking of ways to monetize open source development and make it sustainable for some of the work I'm working on.
@castano You can add sponsorship to GitHub projects and use that as a platform for monetization by providing "tiers" (monthly or one time) with different perks.
@castano As much as I would love to believe that people would just donate to projects they believe in from the goodness of their heart, I think you need to customize the tiers for your project which provide something valuable in return.
@JarkkoL @castano One aspect many seem to overlook is that by selling something, companies can deduct that as expense before tax, whereas a donation is done after tax. (very simplified)
So if you sell support, it'll be easier for companies to support than if you only have patreon/donations.
Depending on the economic situation it can be illegal to give donations, but perfectly fine to buy support.
@Erik_W_B @JarkkoL @castano I stopped many years ago to ever use "donation" terminology, I'm selling development and support services or sponsoring. I also stopped Patreon/GithubSponsors because it created a baseline for companies to lowball their contribution and therefore was financially a net negative.

Just read several threads about people talking about why companies don't donate more to OS, so wanted to comment to @JarkkoL so he wouldn't fall "prey" to that idea.
@juulcat @rokups The API and example code looks pretty straight forward.
The hard part might be fixing some of our functions written on top of ImGui to work well - for example ItemCheck won't work with our checkboxes as is. Additionally some of our widgets IDs depend on their state.

A while ago on Twitter, you mentioned that you were working on a new way to set up bindings for FFI in other languages, so we wouldn't have to rely on cimgui anymore - is this still something you're planning to do? Our .NET bindings are a big pain point for us and we'd like to come up with something new, so we were looking forward to that. Thanks!

@daniel_collin Yes in theory, but there are misc bugs here and there with some cases that needs fixing. Viewports are currently half-supported, have known issues.
@daniel_collin Obviously we want to drive viewport stuff but we also want to make it 100% impossible for test engine to inject OS-side inputs, there may be conflicting cases.
